A Letter From Our Chair

19 Mar A Letter From Our Chair

Dear TEDxUTSC Community,

As the school year draws to a close and we begin the process of transitioning to our new team, on behalf of TEDxUTSC 2017, I’d like to thank you all for your support of TEDxUTSC over the past several months.

Back in June, our team gathered together to pick a theme we felt represented what the 5th year of this conference meant to not only us, but to the UTSC community as a whole. At the time, we already were seeing disturbing trends of silencing and repressing the voices and experiences of those in our communities and we wanted this conference to be a place where those stories and ideas would be not only represented, but amplified and celebrated. This is how we came to decide on Ellipses. In literature, an ellipsis represents an omission, however, as one of our 2017 speakers Sonja Nikkila explains in her TEDxTalk, it also invites and challenges the reader to use their imagination to continue the story and fill in that blank. We could think of no better way to represent the role of TEDxUTSC on this campus in our 5th year.

I’ve personally been involved in TEDxUTSC from the very beginning of my time at UTSC, bearing witness to its importance in highlighting the ideas, research, and stories of our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and important voices in the community. In this way, to honour and continue the work of the chairs and teams that have come before us, we planned this conference to be a love letter to UTSC and the people who make this campus what it is.

On Februrary 4th, that love letter came to life thanks to the hard work of our team, sponsors, advisory board, and of course; our speakers. It was an amazing day and we could not have done it without the support of the University of Toronto Scarborough community, as well as all of our friends, families, partners, and each other. We are honoured to have been able to bring these ideas to you whether it was through the event itself, LiveStream, Twitter, or our forthcoming Talk videos which will be launching soon.

We hope your support for TEDxUTSC will continue for our 6th conference next year and beyond.

Thank you for being a part of our story…

Daniela Spagnuolo
